DC Management Changes

Not sure exactly what's going on over at DC, but some new titles are being passed out. My "Comic Store Guy" was under the impression that Geoff Johns would be inheriting the Editor In Chief position from Dan Didio as Didio moves up the corporate ladder, but that isn't what this article indicates.

Hopefully Johns will one day (If this day isn't it. I'm a little cloudy on what all these jobs do) be given the reins to control all of the DC Universe, but until then, at least he will be the chief "go to" guy when shows, games and movies about these characters are made. A VERY smart move, DC!

My question about this -- and any move like this in the comics industry -- is whether the temperment of successful creative people (Johns, in this case) is the same temperment needed in a more leadership/management position.

I'm hopeful, but uncertain.

I was JUST thinking that the other day but forgot to blog it. A very good point. Johns' ideas would be brilliant for future DC ventures, but the success of their use will depend on his people skills and leadership ability.

Of course, even if he blows it, I'll be excited for him to have more time for writing comics! (Another concern. I hope he doesn't have to stop writing GL or Flash because of his new gig! And put him on Justice League, please!!)

Hey Paeter,

I was wondering if you were going to talk about this.

There is a prevailing ideology in the comic book industry goes as follows. What's successful at Marvel can also work and DC, and vice-versa. This is true in this executive change up at DC.

A few years ago we saw an artist and Marvel's top writers take the top executive jobs in Marvel. Now were are finally seeing the same thing happen at DC.

Why did this take so long? I think it was a few things. First, I feel that with Disney's acquisition of Marvel, parent company Warner Bros. has finally taken notice of their comics brand.

They are looking at what was going on at DC and are keeping the people that they absolutely CAN'T LOSE.

These choices are obvious to those in the comic book industry.

Keep the two best guys you got and pay them more money.

Jim Lee and Geoff Johns are probably the biggest names that the company has, and it's not like their output is anything to shake a stick at.

Jim Lee's work on the Batman: Hush storyline with Jeff Loeb revival mini-series put Batman back on the map to relevancy. His work on Batman with Frank Miller is also well recieved when not plagued by delays. Lee's popularity only seems to grow.

John's work at DC over the past few years has been nothing short of legendary.

The current Blackest Night storyline crafted by Johns, is just the most recent example of what he can do when others leave him alone and let him do what he does best. Blackest Night has been a huge boost to DC sales and has ties throughout the entire DC line.

John's has figured out ways of taking DC's fringe characters, and not only making them fresh and exciting, but essential reading.

Just about anything with Jim Lee or Geoff Johns personally attached to it sells very well. And why is that? Both have a track record of quality work, and I'm glad someone at DC/Warner Bros has taken notice.

Brad, I think maybe we share a hive mind. I'm not sure, but I think maybe. I'm positive I couldn't have expressed my identical sentiments as well as you did. Especially your observations of Johns' work.

Thanks, bro!
